My fifth completed painting. I wanted to show soldiers I served with that were killed in Afghanistan during our tour in 2009. I decided to use photographs to preserve their exact image. The UK had a significant role in the War in Afghanistan, hence the Union Flag, and I wanted to symbolise the UK being drawn and sucked into the Afghan abyss. I wanted also to suggest the UK has been scarred and tattered by this decade long campaign with the worn look on the flag. Carried with it are the bodies of soldiers who died. Images shown on the painting are the Afghanistan Casualty List of 2009, a funeral procession in Royal Wootten Bassett and the faces of:

Private Robbie Laws 2 MERCIAN killed in Afghanistan 4th July 2009.
Lance Corporal David ‘Duke’ Dennis Light Dragoons killed in Afghanistan 4th July 2009.
Lance Corporal Dane Elson Welsh Guards killed in Afghanistan 5th July 2009.
Private Gavin Elliott 2 MERCIAN killed in Afghanistan 3rd September 2009.
Lance Sergeant Dan Collins Welsh Guards killed himself in Wales 31st December 2011.

All served within B Company 2 MERCIAN in Afghanistan 2009, under my command.
